Bio

Dave Spicer built his profession as Trial lawyer, handling civil litigation in over 1000 cases and trying cases in over 25 areas of law practice, an accomplishment unheard of today in this time of specialization. In the last several years, Dave has exclusively done estate planning as part-time solo practitioner, retiring last year after 44 years. He was privileged to handle over one million dollars in pro bono (free) legal work over the course of his career: some of his most meaningful clients and legal work.
In addition to part-time law practice, Dave worked a second career in the nonprofit world doing work with Agros International in Central America focused on water projects, economic development, and land acquisition for peasant farmers. He also worked with local nonprofit St. Vincent de Paul, helping the homeless and veterans and, finally, as Development Director for an assisted living facility called Horizon House. He received the District 5030 Service Above Self Award in 1998 from PDG Stan Dickinson.
In addition to serving on the Board of numerous nonprofits as well and coaching over 20 seasons of baseball, soccer, and track with his two kids, Dave has been a Rotarian since age 33. Dave is now in his 40th year serving University District Rotary, and was a member of NE Seattle Rotary prior to that. Over the years, he has given his time in service of many leadership positions, including Board of Director posts, chair of all major committees, and terms as President of both clubs. Since 1998, he has helped organize 57 critical Rotary water projects in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, helping an estimate of over 250,000 beneficiaries. Since 2002, Dave has traveled on 12 separate Rotary humanitarian trips to 6 countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Viet Nam, Nicaragua and El Salvador) providing assistance with polio vaccination, water and sanitation, and working in orphanages. He is currently serving in his third year as Chair of the District 5030 Environmental Sustainability Committee.
Dave has been active in environmental advocacy since 1975, following his graduation from Dartmouth College, where he majored in political science with a minor in Environmental Studies. He then attended Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon, which specialized in an environmental law curriculum. He has been active over the past 50 plus years in supporting the Sierra Club, Earthjustice and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
After family, two careers, and his religious faith, Dave counts Rotary as the best decision of his life. He remains very grateful for the blessing of his 47-year marriage to his wife Marti, his two adult kids Chris (Boston) and Casey (LA), their partners, and 4 wonderful grandchildren.
